I still have the issue of MM2K that had the feature article written about Dr. Dullnig’s party, including details about the yogurt/Demerol cocktail he whipped up and that ultimately allowed him to die with dignity and on his own terms.
I was only 16 when that issue hit the stands. I couldn’t forget the photo of the Doc, his yogurt, and the most content look on his face. That image stuck with me for many years because it seemed so counterintuitive seeing someone actually hastening their own death with a smile on their face. He struck me as an incredibly courageous man. Since first reading that piece, I have been a huge advocate for physician assisted suicide. If I’m being perfectly honest, considering how strongly I feel about our birthright of bodily sovereignty, I do support others right to end their own lives as they see fit (assuming that they do not harm anyone else in the process), but I digress...
Dr. Dullnig was most definitely a pioneer in the use of AAS to combat the various wasting syndromes that are most commonly found in individuals suffering from immune compromise/deficiency. He was a real beacon of hope for people who had a legitimate medical need for AAS. I sincerely hope that wherever he is now, he can see just how much his work has helped a countless number of HIV/AIDS patients.
