    As a submariner, today holds a little special meaning for me:

    1777 - American explosive device made by David Bushnell explodes near British vessel off New London, CT.

    After two more unsuccessful attempts, Bushnell determined that better-trained operators were required and turned his attention to using mines to strike the enemy. He constructed two mines and set them afloat in Black Point Bay, in Connecticut, on August 13, 1777.

    Mr Bushnell designed the first 'submarine' ever to be used in combat - the Turtle that had unsucessfully attacked the British in the NY Harbor a little less than a year previous.
