  • BSA NATIONALS EXPERIENCE

Whats up guys...Just got back home late last night from Atlanta an wanna share my experience with you..It all started Thursday afternoon where I was scheduled to fly out around noon but flight got delayed an didnt get into Atlanta until 4pm...That sucked as I begin to start stressn because Im very impatient an hate waiting...As many of yall know I was posting pics up until I left an was looking an feeling real good...When I arrived at the airport with my girlfriend who didnt attend either of my other shows due to the pressure an I was treating her pretty bad etc from the mood swings an the pressure leading into these shows./..So she was excited an we had our best 16 week prep with no drama stress etc..We get to airport an check in bags an of course one of our luggage weighed 53lbs,So as bad as the economy is I was charged $39 dollars for being 3lbs over the weight limit..That didnt sit well with me at all but I couldnt afford any stress so just paid an proceeded to Security checkpoint..I brought a new cooler for this trip so I could have all my meals for this trip in 1 cooler..It was nice n big an was similiar to a suitcase with wheels etc..Very easy instead of having to carry it etc ...So we go to security an I put the big cooler up on the podium to get x-rayed..lol...As usual the problem gets worse..The guy says I gotta go through the entire cooler etc,I was like no problem its just food for my bodybuilding show etc...This guy was the biggest d*** ever..He took my peanut butter an my fish an almost took my chicken,Why I have no fuckn clue...That was the bulk of my food for entire weekend...He was about to take my cooked rice as well...So I began to argue with the guy an plead my case etc but he wasnt hearn nothing an basically threw my food away in front of me..That food wasnt cheap...So I swallowed it up an continued on with just rice cakes an my rice an they took my macadamium nut oil as well......
Finally that was done an I had to wait in the airport extremely pissed off sweatn an begin to spill over etc....My girl was very supportive as she can control me sometimes...,,She said she will get to Atlanta and make sure to get whatever I needed dont stress you worked to hard...Cool...So finally our flight get here after a 2hr delay...We board the flight an now the cooler cant fit in the overhead..What more can happen,They say I have to check it in,So I do that an pay another #25 for a extra bag...Shaking my head..We arrive in Atlanta as it was a short flight an we get off plain an I forgot how big Atl airport is an decided to walk to the baggage area..Dummy move..Instead of walkn I could have jumped on airtran to the baggage area instead of walkn when I was already stressn an spilling over bigtime..I left Maryland weighn 285...Got to baggage claim an got luggage an all my food containers in cooler had opened up an was all over the cooler...Wow..Worse trip ever...So now Im like sayn to my girl,Im done I cant compete under these circumstances etc,I was serious to...We get everything an proceed to curb to decide how we will get to hotel,So I say lets just jump in cab an get there ASAP..Fine..That cost $30 plus 2 dollars for each person ...So already Im like $150 in the whole before we even get there..We get to hotel check in an right away I strip down an look at myself,Im flat an stringy as shit...Weigh-ins was at 7:30 an its now almost 5..Still gotta get painted etc an eat something..So I DECIDED i NEEDED FATS ETC or just a cheat meal,So I send her to Mcdonalds which is right up the street from hotel about a block away..I get a burger an 2 order of fries...That worked AWESOME..I filled back out an drunk almost a gallon of water an was weighn now about 275..Still light in my eyes...So I wanted to weigh-in like JRS at 280.Got painted an went down to weigh ins but didnt wanna weigh in until friday morning but was forced to get it over with...So I suck it up an go...I began to sweat inside more from just the sress an heat an pressure etc..Finally Supers are called up an I weigh in at 278,Same weight as USAS where I was way off..So i new it wasnt my weekend right there...
Got back to room an begin to push the protein down as I got a chinese lady to grill me some chicken an alot of white rice...I brought some more oil from store I sent girl to...So I begin to follow Daves plan but I know Im off because I know my body...Get to bed early an hope friday is a miracle..NOT...LOL...Finally get to prejudging an my color is awful an IM OFF...Once you win a big show like I did at JRS,The judges expect you to show up like that or better an anything less,YOUR OFF..Its about 30 supers...An they have a cut-off right at pre-judging..I make top 15 an continue with the show..Im next to TREY BREWER who I destroyed at JRS an Ed Nunn on my left...Both improved an BSA OFF..So not lookn good but I continue battling etc/..Finally we all get called out an Im not in 1st call out..No problem I wasnt gonna Bitch after what I been through...So they 3 more guys up next,Not BSA but Im still holding up...Finally they call me in 3rd callout..I finished in 9th as many of yall know already..But after taking 9th at USAS,I was very disappointed with my showing...Went back to room an was completely hurt as It took 24hrs to take my body from lookn good up until to crash the final 2 days...
At first I wasnt going back to finals an wanted to Quit all 2gether but again my girl put me in check etc...So I did what I know my body needed to do was eat n eat an fill out..I ate steak an everything I could eat...Looked much better the next day an came back for the night show like a man..They called my name an I hit my poses an my night an 16 weeks of hell was done...I talked an mingled with many of my friends, fans,PROS,SPONSORS ETC an decided it was another lesson learned..Was my 4th show this yr an it was time to reflect on the positive things I accomplished this yr...Looked so much better an felt good as I filled out an skin was much tighter compared to the pre-judging pics where I LOOKED LIKE SHIT...I was approached by MUSCLE-MAG an did a shoot with them Sunday an also PLANET MUSCLE...So the trip ended on a positive note..Im already in every magazine now an anymore publicity is better for me...So I got home late last night an look like I should have looked at NATIONALS but to late now..lol...I will be back bigger n better in 2009 an IM NOT DONE...I will do one show next yr with my eye on that PRO CARD...I will began training after holidays as my body needs a rest to chill an relax with my LOVED ONES..My KIDS NEED THERE DAD BACK...So Im gonna enjoy the holidays an come back hard in 09...I will be training with BRANDON RAY who will win USAS IN 2009 as a LIGHT HEAVY..THANK EVERYONE for the support an CONGRATS to the NEW PROS...Everyone enjoy the holidays an be THANKFUL for all the positive thngs in life.....Hope I didnt bore you guys..Just wanted to share my weekend....TIME TO EATTTT..

I can't believe that guy threw your food out. I wouldn't let that one go if I were you, that's not right.

Gotta say through all that bs and stress, you handled it very well. I probably would have flipped. I know i would not have let that security guard throw my food out lol, i probably would have been arrested because hes just a moron for throwing out food. I dunno how you held your composure. Its good that you had your girl with you tho, sometimes you need that one person who knows how to calm you down.

Honestly, i think dieting for an entire year will wear ANYBODY out. Your body already doesnt want to be THAT low bodyfat, and is fighting you every step of the way. To hold it that low for that long....just not gonna happen. You woulda been right near the top if you showed up like you did at Atlantics and Juniors. That is when you peaked. Knowing that, you can come back bigger and stronger for next year. You already know what you have to work on, and if you bring that up to where the rest of you is, i doubt anybody can stand next to you on the amateur level at least. You should be shooting for 300lbs on stage with all the added weight in the right place.

Looking forward to the 2009 season myself, as i know you are. You know, as always, il be rootin for you every step of the way. My bro kept askin how you did as well. We both wish you the best, i wont say good luck, cuz i know youl MAKE it happen. Hope to see you and catch up at some of the matches this year if you happen to swing by Jersey, if not im sure il see you at some point.

Thanks again for helping me keep my head straight these past few years when its been in the wrong place, youv been one of the only people who can really talk to me when my mind is headed in the wrong direction (and for keepin me from getting thrown out or getting arrested a few times haha)......

By the way....some of the kids you were training have seriously hammered it this past offseason and are becoming quite scary on the mat tearin shit up....you would be proud....

Man Sean, by no means do I think that I am in a league to give someone like yourself advice but take this message more as support rather than advice. You need to learn how to control your emotions. Last post I read you were done for good and next post I read you are ready to give it one more shot???

It sounds like half of the problem of you being off was a result of the stress that you created yourself. You have to learn how to let that sh!t slide right off your shoulders. One of my favorite quotes is “if we couldn’t laugh we’d all go insane.”

Point 1 – How do you think Trey felt at JRS with all the hype and expectation people had of him. Then he ends up looking the way he did. Now that was some pressure and he didn’t meet those expectations but he dealt with it.

Point 2 – You won JRS!!! That show was yours this year. Every show can’t be yours. Live and learn. Your time will come.

I could go on and on. Last year I woke up the morning of my show and never imagined I could look so flat. I called my nutritionist and he said I was just freaking out. Then he called my girlfriend who was upstairs. And she told him ya, he looks horrible. And my girlfriend does not have an eye for that sort of thing so he new if she thought I looked flat then it must be really bad. I did what I could do to save grace, never filled out but took second.

Next show, same thing happen. Only this time at 6am I ran to burger king and ate some sausage and egg breakfast sandwiches and ate but watched my stomach. I did come in at about 85% but looked much better than the last show. In my eyes I had second again. After all, I was much improved from the last show. NOPE, I took 4th and two guys who have never beat me finished ahead of me. I was upset and blew up a little when I got off-stage and it took my friend and girlfriend 2 second and one sentence and I was back to normal. They said, pick your head up, don’t be a sore loser. I smiled and thought to myself. Yep, this show was a blast, I had a very good time and next year will be better. I had a great rest of the night.

Every single pro out there has stories that make mine and yours look like a walk in the park. Pull yourself together. You have a gift, don’t give up, use it!!!! Excuses are like @ssholes, everyones got one. Keep it to yourself and just chalk it up to “I was off and it wasn’t my show.”

As for your airport experience. Next time call me for packing advice….LOL. You are lucky they let you take your chicken. This was all due to a lack of planning. Especially since it was a short flight you could have checked your cooler, taped it shut, and put the food and oil in zip lock bags. The air pressure is was got to your Tupperware containers etc…..

I hope you are going to be at the ASC. I will be sure to come by and say hello. In the time being, sit back, enjoy the experience, the lessons learned, and treat your girl like a lady. It sounds like she’s a keeper if you two made it through this. Till then you have my support and I have great confidence in you. You could be a top contender in the “O” someday. Just keep those emotions and head in check.

Take care of yourself and keep your head up.

Sean, you need a trip planner, someone who knows the layout (airports) and rules (peanut butter is considered a liquid) so the pressure is off YOU! Where the hell are all your sponsors? Shouldn't there be some kind of consierge service from these people that can help you get to weigh-in in one piece?

And you can bring food with you if packed right.

Maybe I'll start that service....a bodybuilder's travel agency! How can anyone expect a carb-deprived individual to think straight....;-)

The reality is that post 9/11 travel with all the security is a stressful ordeal, but that is reality.I don't know where BSA lives but if he is within a reasonable DRIVE from any of the pro qualifiers ( USA, N America and next yrs nationals) that is the show I would do.Esplendido is right, it would be nice to have some conceirge service, but as working man and dad he may not be able to afford all that and still compete. I sure couldn't.Plus, you don't need to spend all that extra $$ if you just work at some additional planning for the trip.

Ok BSA, you now know that the travel and mundane stuff are big deals at a pro qualifier. I suspect the extra sodium from the burger/fires meal may have made you fill out but also helped to leave that lil' film that blurred your cuts??? hmmmmmmmmm.
If you have to fly just be sure to pack your stuff after checking with the airline regulations. Now that you have made contacts on the board, have some good person pick you up at the airport. I just met you , but would be happy to do so if you ever come back to ATL.
As I told you at the show, the real trophy is that lovely woman beside you and your kids. Like Bob chic told you already, don't blow up over 300 lbs in te off season and don't even get on a scale. Go for refinement, refinement, refinement! Good luck, keep oosting your stuff is interesting to read.

BSA, this is a great post and you should read it again.
Some great advice here, trust me.
Ya know the great Arnold won his first big show after he snuck out and went AWOL from the Austrian army ( Mr Europe Jr). He got thrown into the brig (jail) after being caught sneaking back in with his trophy.
Arnold got beat by 185 lb Zane at his 1st Mr Universe.
                    Did that stop Arnold? NO!

Lee Haney had the brakes go 90% out in his car on his way to the teen nationals yrs ago. He has this great stroy of he was able to drive slower, used the parking brake and down shifted to keep driving and get to the show.

A good buddy of mine Paul Ware had his pro tan go bad from the heat in the car???? and it looked greenish when he was in the hotel room the night before the show.

Once again, not sure where you live but of at all possible considering driving to your next big show.
99% of all pro bodybuilders and actors in Hollywood , have horrer stories before they made it. NObody gives it to you and it is never easy climbing the ladder. I lost my job and had to drop out of full time college yrs ago.
I joined the US marines and it was a "growing up" experience. I ended up returning to college and was able to afford a medium size school in Eastern KY. It was a meager , poor mans lifestyle as a college student in the hills of Ky hehe. I made it and kept at it and today have 2 graduate degrees and a stable career as physics teacher ( past 18 yrs).
Stay HUMBLE, stay calm and stay on track. The only one that can stop BSA , is BSA!

All I'm gonna say is f*ckin airport security is so far beyond ridiculous. I've had the same thing happen to me. The best part is that TSA is not uniform whatsoever. Some places will let you through with food and those frozen ice packs, some won't. I was on a connecting flight (I left and came back) and the woman asked me if I wanted to put my ice packs in my car, I told her that I had already been through security with it and she replied, "really?". The last time I went through and they pulled this shit I started cussing...lol...I lost my head...the TSA agent started freaking out and reprimanding me. We have lost a lot of freedoms since 9-11. Reason no longer applies. Wow, apparently I needed to get that off my chest...lmao.

Competing is emotional, we are so used to having things in our control and then things like this happen and we lose that control, when it happens at the last minute it's very tough to blow it off. You sucked it up and did your best, that's all you can do brother. Bad shit happens to good people. Keep doing your thing and enjoy the Holidays with you family and give yourself a much needed break!

I appreciate everyones feedback...Im just happy to be home safe an back with my family living a Normal lifestyle again..Yes I admit,It definetely was a learning experience an now I realize why guys drive from distances to big shows..If you listened to ED NUNNS INTERVIEW after he won,He drove 8hrs to go to Nationals...Mike Libertore also drove from a distance to go to Nationals..Me myself always look for the easy way out an would rather put my stress in someones else hands to get me to my show but after this weekend,I realize its not worth it..To many rules an regulations etc...Atleast if I drive Im in control of my destiny..Dont know if it will be less stressful since I will be driving somewhere I know nothing about..What if I get a flat tire? What if my car dies out?Theres many factors you must consider when making decisions like those we choose in our lives...Im a very Impatient man an wanna get to my destination as fast as possible with the minimum less stress but Im definetely considering driving to my next show next yr...I drove to the Arnold from NJ,That was 8hrs an I got car sick...Had to pull over countless times to let go etc but I got there...Other then that the longest drive I ever did was when I moved to MARYLAND this yr from NJ an thats a 4 hr drive but thats not to bad...I can handle that no problem but 8hrs or more,I think I would be just as stressed as this weekend...So I GOT PLENTY OF TIME TO THINK ABOUT MY GOALS AN PLANS FOR 2009...Right now I just wanna recover n rest from the 4 shows I competed in this yr...I have no regrets an learned alot an made alot of new friends, fans etc...Of course I DIDNT ACCOMPLISH my goal but I do know this..Life isnt always about wether you WIN OR LOSE but HOW YOU WIN OR LOSE..Based on what I went through this weekend starting last thursday,Made me feel like a CHAMPUION because I kept striving an continued what I started...It was tough but I did it an now back at home an very THANKFUL..The night show was AWESOME an it was my 1st time my Girl saw me compete an I been with her 2 yrs now...So that was Great...Also I talked with BOB Chic who I thought was against me etc an I stepped to him like a gentleman to see if it was personal an he had nothing but positive things to say an not only in bodybuilding but in life...The fans where AWESOME an many of my buddies competing who I see maybe once a yr,I had a chance to talk n laugh with them..So overall I THANK ALL OF YOU an I HOPE ALL OF YOU HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING..I didnt post this for sympathy but more to share lifes trials n tribulations that we all face...ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE AN WHAT DONT KILL ME WILL ONLY MAKE ME STRONGER..THNX FOR LISTENING...,
