The original Game of Thrones series quickly became a massive hit for HBO after launching in 2011 and eventually went on to become the premium network’s biggest series in history. Following the record-breaking final season earlier this year, HBO moved several prequel and spinoff ideas into various stages of development. It looked as though the future of HBO was going to be rooted in the Game of Thrones franchise, but that seems a lot less likely now. The untitled Game of Thrones prequel series starring Naomi Watts, which had already shot a pilot, was passed on by the network, killing the story before it even started.

According to a new report from Deadline, HBO has opted not to move forward with the first Game of Thrones prequel series from writer Jane Goldman. Of the various Game of Thrones series at HBO, this prequel was easily the furthest along, meaning that the first spinoff probably won't actually air for some time.

This prequel was set to take place thousands of years before the events of the main Game of Thrones series, dealing with issues of power, race, and the introduction of the White Walkers. In addition to Watts, the cast of the prequel included Josh Whitehouse, Miranda Richardson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Toby Regbo, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Naomi Ackie, Marquis Rodriguez, John Simms, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, And Dixie Egerickx.

A second prequel was greenlit by HBO last month, this one much more closely tied to the original series. The pilot of this series comes from George RR Martin and Ryan Condal, and takes place about 300 years before Game of Thrones. It will reportedly focus on the fall of House Targaryen.

      • After The Mandalorian, Natalia Tena Is First to Appear in Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter

One could (very easily) argue that the three biggest franchises in the world at any given moment are Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter. Now, one familiar face has shown up in all three, as Natalia Tena made her Star Wars debut in the sixth episode of The Mandalorian, after previously appearing as Osha in Thrones and Nymphadora Tonks in the Harry Potter series.

In The Mandalorian, Tena plays Xi'an, a mercenary who appears to be of the Twi'Lek species—you may recall Oola, Jabba the Hutt's Twi-Lek slave who he fed to the Rancor in Return of the Jedi. Xi'an has a romantic history with Mando, clearly, which, we can get into another time. But it's an interesting appearance for Tena, who becomes the first performer to appear in the modern iterations of Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter.

Tena's Osha in Game of Thrones was a staple of the early seasons, a wildling who at first appears adversarial, but eventually becomes a trusted friend of Bran and the Starks. Her Harry Potter character was similarly memorable, a half-blood witch, and a member of the Order of the Phoenix who was related to Sirius Black, Bellatrix Lestrange, and married to Professor Lupin. Tena appeared as the character in the last four films of the series.

Other performers—including, of course, Pedro Pascal— have appeared in two of the three; Gwendoline Christie, who, of course, played Brienne of Tarth on Thrones, also appeared in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi as Captain Phasma. Domhnall Gleeson, who plays the villainous General Hux in the new Star Wars movies, also played Bill Weasley in both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows installments. A few others, like Ciaran Hinds (Mance Rayder in Thrones and Dumbledore's brother in Potter) have made appearances in two of the three, but Tena is the first to check off all three boxes.

        • Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju has has supposedly landed a role in the second season of Netflix’s The Witcher, according to recent reports. Redanian Intelligence, a site that’s all about covering news on The Witcher and other similar projects, said Hivju has had been cast as the character “Nivellen” in the show’s next season. This latest assurance of the actor’s inclusion in The Witcher follows rumors from before that suggested the actor might be involved with the show.

Redanian Intelligence cited a casting breakdown as the source of the information about Hivju has supposedly playing Nivellen. The casting breakdown was reportedly obtained by the site with the actor’s name listed among others.

Like other characters from the first season of The Witcher and rumors about casting options for the second season, the name “Nivellen” itself wasn’t listed. Instead, the codename “Nigel” was used. The character’s description which calles him “charismatic, witty, and funny,” according to the site, matches up with what Nivellen would be like. The “Nigel” character is also supposed to come from an aristocratic family and bears a curse stemming from crimes he committed in the past. The casting breakdown further described the role as one which would be physically demanding and would require a “great emotional range.”

Those familiar with The Witcher novels may recall Nivellen from The Last Wish. The character was featured in story where he was cursed to take on a monstrous appearance from the outside. The character was never mentioned in the first season of The Witcher that set up the foundation of the stories between Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri, and others, though he’ll apparently appear in the next season.

But he may not be in the show for long though, perhaps as a one-and-done story. The character will supposedly only appear in the opening episode of the show’s next season, though that along with the casting confirmation itself remains to be seen.

Nivellen was one of several characters who appeared in the list of characters who will apparently be appearing in The Witcher’s second season. Other characters included Vesemir and Dijkstra, though if you’ve been keeping up with news surrounding possible casting decisions, you’ll already know some of the people who are up for playing those roles.
