Really depends. Wide squatters tend to favor chucks. Narrow squatters favor oly shoes. I've used soccer shoes, chucks, vibrams, and a low heeled oly shoe. I like the oly shoe the best as it made getting to depth easier for me. IMO anything with a hard sole that doesn't give would work, just personal preference from there.

Ideally squat shoes for squats (the ones with a wooden heel) and 'Deadlift slippers' or something with a very flat, thin sole for deads.

    above.

I use my vibrams for pulling
and I like to squat in my Otomix (probably 10 years old) or my work boots. I assume I would like oly shoes but I won't spend the money.

really a personal preference sort of thing.

bare foot is the way forward for squats and deads.

Unless you are a powerlifter you should stay away from a heeled shoe on squats. The heel can help with strength and depth but it comes at price of throwing body mechanics into a different plane and resulting in reduced flexibility long term.

If you are a bodybuilder get a pair of vibram 5 fingers or other barefoot style shoe.

    Agreed.

Curious about squatting in some Nike Romaleos 2, since they're apparently a little wider than the Adidas Powerlifts and other oly shoes since I have wide feet.. but pretty hard to get hold of in the UK for a reasonable price, to will continue to squat and deadlift barefoot until I get my hands on some to try out.

When deadlifting and squatting no shoes is the best way.

5 years later and the thread is still on page 1 lol sad /.... lol just got me some matflex wrestling shoes bad ass for deads.. Sambo looked great but to expensive right now.. thinking of getting Oly squat shoes for squats but have read they may not be best depending on squatting style... squat just fine in the matflex as well...but going to order the squat shoes anyway and see if they feel more supportive
