17 Year Old Hangs Himself in the Back of Police Car?...Yeah Right

Gee lemme see, first a handcuffed man manages to shoot himself in the head while in the back of a police car, now we have a 17 year old, who was handcuffed, who managed to hang himself while in the back of a police car. First off it is IMPOSSIBLE to hang yourself while in a seated position, even more impossible if you're handcufffed and TRULY IMPOSSIBLE considering teh seat belt is NOT a ligature that does not move. A seat built does not lock into position until you are actually in a collision, so how was the tension possible on the belt to HANG A PERSON?

As reported by the Indianapolis Star, the Anderson Indiana Police are claiming that a 17 year old boy has committed suicide in the back seat of a police car.

Sandefur said the 17-year-old's hands were cuffed behind his back and that the teen was placed alone in the patrol car's back seat as officers processed the other juvenile and the man. While officers handled the two other suspects, Sandefur said the teen somehow maneuvered his cuffed hands from behind him to his front and then used a seat belt as a ligature to hang himself.

I do not know what to say. I cannot believe the story the police are reporting. I have nothing below the squiggle but empty sadness.

It would be virtually impossible to hang yourself in the back seat of a cop car, especially while cuffed. It would take a lot of effort to be even able to choke yourself, and the second you passed out the pressure would release, allowing breathing to resume. As even if the cops wouldn't notice someone trying to do that, and even if the guy did succeed in choking himself out, the cops could have revived him. How long did they claim to leave him in the car without checking on him him?

No info on how long he was in the car, what his demeanor was, his size or weight (which will reveal if maneuvering his cuffed arms from behind him was even possible), no reason for why he was arrested in the first place...

If you yank it quickly the belt will
Lock out and If u wrapped it round your neck and slouched down across the back
Seat perhaps it could be done but I doubt it

As far as hanging myself: Its a hobby of mine. I get in the back of my car and hang myself at least once a week with the seat belt. Great stress reliever.

Seat belts do not LOCKOUT no matter how fast you yank it. The tensioning mechanism is a pendulum that swings into a pinning position temporarily as the car is actually in the collision phase. As soon as the collision phase is over the pendulum swings back and releases the tension on the belt and it is free to move again. Your talking about barely a second of time the belt will remain in the "locked" state during a collision.

Despite this ridiculous scenario it would be impossible for the belt to lock around a person's neck to initiate hanging as well as the fact not enough tension could be had from slouching/sitting down position to asphyxiate a person.

perhaps it could be done but I doubt it

The question that needs to be asked is WHY WOULD A PERSON HANG THEMSELVES FOR NO REASON OR SUCH A MINOR REASON? WHAT IS WITH THESE CASES OF PEOPLE DYING/BEING KILLED WHILE IN POLICE CUSTODY/CARS RECENTLY?
