NEW YORK, March 9, 2009 -- SIRIUS XM Radio announced that legendary rock band Metallica will host their own music channel on SIRIUS XM. Mandatory Metallica will be broadcast on SIRIUS channel 27 and XM channel 42 and will debut on Saturday, March 14 starting at 6:00 pm ET and run through Monday, April 13 at 3:00 am ET. The launch of SIRIUS XM's Mandatory Metallica channel coincides with the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, 2009.

"Metallica is one of the most influential and distinctive bands in the world," said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer, SIRIUS XM Radio. "We are thrilled to broadcast Mandatory Metallica for SIRIUS XM listeners and give Metallica fans a place to go to hear all the music, interviews and rarities with this incredible rock band all in one place for thirty days."

The channel will also feature interviews with Metallica guitarist and singer James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo.

In addition to interviews with all four band members, Mandatory Metallica will air exclusive interviews with other artists sharing their personal insights about Metallica's influence on music, including Linkin Park, Slipknot, Disturbed, Guns N' Roses, Chris Cornell, RUSH, Ashes Divide, Black Stone Cherry, Five Finger Death Punch, Atreyu, Cinderella, Mastodon, Judas Priest, Dragonforce, Triumph, Tesla and others.

In addition to their own SIRIUS XM channel and recent record release, Guitar Hero will launch "Guitar Hero: Metallica" featuring music from the band's 25 year career as well as special hand-picked guest acts on March 29, 2009. METALLICA

    FROM MUSIC NEWS SITE:

"Professionally filmed video footage (courtesy of Metallica.com) from the last two shows of METALLICA's current European tour — on Saturday, May 16 in Oberhausen, Gemany and Sunday, May 17 in Cologne. Germany — can be viewed below. Included are clips from backstage rehearsal jams, fan meet-and-greets and actual performances.

METALLICA's digital "box set" called "The Complete Metallica", featuring the band's entire 163-track recorded catalog, was made available last month.

"The Complete Metallica" was released during a high-profile period for the San Francisco-based hard-rock heroes. On March 29, Activision released the highly anticipated video game Guitar Hero: Metallica, featuring 28 songs from the band's nearly 30-year career. In addition, METALLICA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which honors legendary rock and roll performers, in a ceremony which took place in Cleveland on April 4.

METALLICA recently completed its first proper tour of the United States and Canada in four years in support of the platinum-selling "Death Magnetic", which debuted at No. 1 in September 2008 and won two Grammy Awards for "Best Metal Performance" (for the track "My Apocalypse") and "Best Recording Package."

    from music news site:

Finnish TV channel Nelonen recently conducted
an interview with METALLICA frontman James Hetfield.

"Hetfield spoke frankly in a new interview with
Classic Rock magazine about the band's so-called
"wilderness" years, in the mid-to-latter 90s, during
which drug use and disagreements over the group's
image and sound nearly drove them apart. Hetfield
said he was particularly uncomfortable with the change
in the group's image around the release of its 1996
album "Load". Hetfield explained, "The whole 'We
need to reinvent ourselves' topic was up. Image isn't
an evil thing to me, but if the image isn't you, it doesn't
    make much sense."

Hetfield said that he thought drummer Lars Ulrich
and guitarist Kirk Hammett were "after a U2 kind of
vibe, Bono doing his alter-ego. I couldn't get into it.
I would say at least half the pictures that were to be
in the booklet, I yanked out. The cover went against
what I was feeling. Lars and Kirk were very into abstract
art, pretending they were gay. I think they knew it
bugged me. I think the cover of 'Load' was just a
piss-take around all that. I just went along with all
    this crazy stupid shit."

Hetfield claimed that Ulrich and Hammett bonded over
their drug use during that time and that the band's music
suffered too, saying, "A lot of fans got turned off quite
a bit by the music — but mostly, I think, by the image."

METALLICA bottomed out in the early part of this decade
with the controversial "St. Anger" album and the
documentary "Some Kind of Monster", which chronicled
how they nearly fell apart and how Hetfield himself got sober.

The group rebounded last year with the acclaimed Death
    Magnetic
record, and Hetfield told The Pulse of Radio
there was never really any chance of METALLICA breaking
up for good. "You know, 'St. Anger', the 'Monster' movie,
all the stuff that we went through — once we got back
together and started playing again, we knew that we were
given some sort of gift to continue and not fall like many
other bands have," he said. "So we've got to take care
of this, and we're doing our extra best to do that."

Now, Hetfield said in Classic Rock, METALLICA is a very
balanced group: "The way things are now, Lars and I are
one half of the scale with (bassist) Rob Trujillo and Kirk on
the other. They're great people but they're okay with
someone else driving. It does take that, I think —
they're very un-ego-driven and Lars and I are the
    other way, it seems."
