    Good, really good.

I preferred the time when the athletes controlled their own image, posing style, competition selection and careers. At least then we had an idea of what we liked in a person and their craft compared to the “watered down” conglomeration of different inputs, ideas and formulations rolled into one athlete not knowing who is who and what is what.
Nothing is more powerful than making your own decisions. Of course, a guru can help get you to the top faster by avoiding certain mistakes. But there is a power in having the guts to make mistakes and learn from each one of them so you come back better every time. Ultimately, you are the one who has to go out there on that stage and pose your physique.

Juan Morel use to have a coach and now for past few years has been doing his own prep and look how he has been doing all on his own.

Imo, back in thd day it wasn't so many competitions, where u have to stay in shape year round!
So being on a diet, training, planing, getting sponsored, many tasks for an individual these days, times evolving, so is bodybuilding!

I can see it both ways.

Maybe had Shawn and Kevin used a "guru" then they'd have gotten that Olympia win. I think it adds another dimension to the story line leading up to contests and generates more buzz. I know I've gotten excited when guys jump from on nutritionist to another.

Why would you not want the right assistance when you're in the learning phase? Granted, I didn't have it either and it took me years to figur things out. I would've loved to have saved some time along the way.

Its lke lke the song, "the video killed the radio star", it made sense at one time, but guess what, where's the video, MTV etc now. We still have radio. That being said, the bodybuilder a still follow the diet, they still lift the weights. That hasn't changed. If I'm not mistaken, Charles Glass, Chris Aceto, etc have been helping pro's for over 20 years. What's the big deal?

Dorian didnt have a prep coach and he did ok.

I think it helps to know YOUR body, before you hire someone so that you can give your input about what works and what doesnt!

Sorry my friend, most of the shows today were around "back in the day". The task you speak of, are not any different than they've been for years.

Agreed! Back in the day you would have most of the same shows as now, except for the Ironman and that ran for a good, 15+ years and the post Olympia GP shows. Shit, you'd have 6-8 shows over 12 days

Depends on the prep coach, if the guy has a good eye why wouldn't you take advantage of it in order to come in your best?

Hahah. How is this any different than taking certain gear to best your competition?

The name of the game is to win.

If it takes input from 3 or 4 other sets of eyes, who cares?

The best package on stage that day wins. Doesnt matter prep coach or not.

If anything, learn from those with more experience until you can fly on your own.

Shawn and Kevin are full of it. They had prep coaches too. They just didnt pay them, they werent called "prep gurus" back then.

Everyone needs and gets advice from others in bodybuilding since its an underground'ish "sport" anyhow.

Great article. It is all about the journey and making mistakes. Having a few select mentors, fine. I encourage everyone to view Shawn's interview.
