Great writing from Peter ( as usual) but let's not ignore the main factor for massive freaks of the past 50 years.
    DRUGS!
Without extreme drug use, ultra massive freaks can't be produced.
    Simple truth.

I'm going crazy too, but only Heath's arms seem to be better.

Well one was a bodybuilder, the later is a druguser who pushes himself to the Point that he starts to look like shit.

Collins. Mickelson. Anselmo. Neville. There are a lot of great Phils who have blessed us all, Phil Heath isn't one of them.

EVERY sport has access to the latest "cutting edge" technology.
It's the job of the sport's officials to enforce the rules on what's allowed.

For example, a competitive swimmer can't wear flippers or hand fins to swim faster.
Every judged sport like gymnastics, diving and figure skating all have strictly enforced rules on equipment allowed to compete.
As Bob Chic once told me ; " If they look like a science experiment gone bad, they get last place."

The culture of bodybuilding craved and demanded more mass, deeper cuts and more freaks on the pro stage.
The main goal was never about building the perfect physique. It was to produce and reward the biggest freak.

We've talked about this and you're right.

I remember Jay Cutler talking about the judges rewarding bigger freaks at a seminar in 2001.
When asked, Jay said he preferred his early pro body weighing a ripped 230's .
But, early on a couple IFBB judges informed him he needed to be BIGGER to win.
Once his competitive wt was over 250 lbs, he started winning shows.
To win his first Olympia, he had to be even bigger.

Ronnie Coleman was also pretty candid about the judges telling him the same thing,
    early in his pro career.
