    Default Herniated Disks

    Well here is not a muscle problem but def a lifting related injury. I lifted heavey for about two years now and within the past eight months I have gone extremley heavy in my squats and deadlifts and have been making huge results. Well just by pushing too hard and not resting enough I have managed to herniate two disks. My S1/L5 and L4/L5 have herniated severely. Have done an EMG and show no loss of strength and have also recieved three epidural steriod injections. The herniations are so sever the shots only mildely helped. I went from a constant 6 out of ten on the pain scale to a four. I have since stopped squatting and deadlifting and changed my workout sections. I am now focusing mainly on increasing abdomin and lower back strength. My pain is located from my lower back to the heel of my foot since the nerves are pressing on my sciatic nerve as well. Any PT's out there that can give me stretching or rehab advice to reduce the pain somewhat?

    Default discs

    I can offer an opinion and advice. Find a Chiropractor or medical doctor that utilizes a machine called the DRX9000. It has been shown to rehydrate herniated/bbulging discs. I did it and it worked. My chiro has the machine, did 20 visits back to back and I am better than ever. There is also a similar version of the machine called the vax-D. Good luck bro, but PT and meds are not gonna fix anything long term, been there, done that. You need to bring fluid back to the discs to take the pressure off the nerves. Keep us updated, TTW

    My chiro fixed mys disc in 15 visits with conventional treatment! I checked out that 9000 thing and they wanted like 2 grand for the treatment. My chiro took my insurance, didn't cost anything extra..

    Herniated my L4 and L5 at about 26 years old playing football. Walked into my chiropracter's office bent at the waist like a question mark. Walked out upright. Took a solid 6 months of treatment plus a ton of stretching and core work to get back to living pain free. I too dealt with the pins and needles down the leg etc. No fun at all. Find a good chiro and never let yourself get overweight if you can help it from here forward. If you do, you may find yourself reminded about the injury when you least expect it.

    I've never had to take a shot in the back or go to surgery and my situation was pretty severe at the time. Also, over the decade or so since, I have not been addicted to seeing the chiro either. Maybe a dozen times total since the initial 6 months from the injury.

    Default I agree chiro=best option

    Glad you 2 posters above got relief. I had 2 years on and off of care and no luck. I don't need a PT to teach me anything and drugs did nothing. My chiro is great, but it wasn't enough, so did the DRX and it was the best money I have spent. Best of luck and I hope you get better by regular adjustments.

    Well at least Im not alone! I messed up my back (L2,L3,L4,L5 and S1) squatting approximately 4 yrs ago, slipped and fell on a carboforce bottle that someone left behind me. My fault for not checking the area!! Best advise I can give is REST and ab-work. I once heard someone say, the problem with your back is your front. In other words lose the gut!

    I like to stretch out hams as much as possible. For me my two herniations do not cause a great deal of lower back pain but rather severe pain in my sciatic nerve down my leg from my ham to my calf and lower foot. Any ideas on how to reduce the pain in the nerve?

    All I can tell you is to stay away from surgery. As I say that I mean exhaust everything including chiropractic, therapy, the shots, everything. I did all the above and more and still would wake up some days with paralysis in one leg or both and unimaginable pain other days. Surgery ws my only option, problem was I was 20 years old and no surgeon wanted to touch me at 20. I could not even get a fusion, the post op problems would be too sever at that age. I got a surgeon who would do the surgery. I was cut and they completely removed the L5-S1, which was ruptured and pressing into a nerve. The pain and paraylsis was gone for 6 years then it returned. I still have chronic back pain but nowhere near what I had previously, hopefully one day I will be finanicvally able to get it checked out again....

    I say surgery as a last resort, becuase it is a tough recovery and tricky surgery, by tricky I mean that it won't heal 100% back to normal, plus most likely they will do a fusion and now to got the cage in your back........

    I would go for an MRI or CAT scan, I have two problem disks and that's the same pain areas I get when they blow.

    Default Herniated Disk Opinion from a PT Student

    Nismo. If you have no more pain in your lower back/ upper glute area then you have completey ruptured the disk and therapy, chiropractors can really do little to help this. If there is still pain in the low back or upper glute area then there is a good chance that therapy will work. My advice is to seek out a Physical Therapist or Chiropractor that specializes in McKenzie method since this has a very good research basis for fixing the problem. A PT would be able to evaluate you and then at least within 1-3 visits tell if you will benefit from therapy. I hesitate giving you exercises with out evaluating you. I know it says student but I am finished with all of my school work and I am just doing clinic work now so I aint no dumbass. E-mail me and I will elaborate more.

    Pearce: I would also tell you to go visit a physical therapist who is either McKenzie or Maitland trained. Often times you can have small damage to the disk that creates pain and then heals and goes away. As time goes by you repeatedly have progressive damage to that same location and eventually you disrupt the disk. Your problem may not be a disk at all but you would need to be evaluated for that to be determined. An MRI is expensive and as a first result I would visit a PT. Till that time ice the area for 20 min on & 20 min off. Avoid prolonged sitting positions and always sit with the proper posture. If you have to sit for prolonged periods of time be sure to take small breaks to stand and perform a few short range standing hyperextensions. Also when performing any movement that requires bending over use your legs and maintain your neutral spine position as best as possible. Any further questions e-mail me.

    Quick word on Mckenzie treatment. Mckenzie is really effective for herniated disk that are not completely ruptured. A quick way to estimate if you have a complete rupture is often times your pain that was once in your lower back and radiated down the leg disappears and you only have radiating pain/ numbness and tingling down the leg. Mckenzie specialist would also be able to give you exercises that once you are "fixed" the first time and then re-injure yourself again these same exercise would work again without the need to continued visits to the PT or Chiropractor.

    I will email you when i am done with work. I used to have lower back pain but that subsided when i grunted through the pain and focused hard on my abs and lower back, with my two herniations I dont squat or deadlift anymore for obvious reasons but i do lower back exercises with light weight and high reps, somedays i can do it somedays my leg hurts like hell. I can tell you honestly for the past six months the only pain i get is in my sciatic nerve, it can be from a constant 3 up to a 6 or seven at times. I dont complain much but when i cant walk for a minute straight before i have to sit because the ache and pain is so bad then its messed up. As of lately I have rearranged my leg workout and back workout, pain is managable, has not increased as of late. Only increases when i do long amounts of walking or standing, really messes with me on my cardio days since i cant run i have to bike. I have a methylprednisol pack in case i ever flare up real bad again. Also have vics but dont like to take them. i do get light pain in my lower back and when reviewing my mri no doctor ever brought up a ruptured disk on herniations of the two.

    nismo; The thing about herniated discs aka ruptured discs is that if you begin having back pain with leg pain and decide to push through it and then suddenly you notice hey my back don't hurt no more but you still have the pain down the leg, then you likely have a completely incompetent disc. This type of thing can present as sciatic nerve problems. The other possiblity for the leg pain is an adherent nerve or nerve root compression. All of which needs to be evaluated by a MD. If your MRI was prior to the back pain going away then you will likely need another one. The adherent nerve can easily be treated by a PT and if it is nerve root compression then the casue would have to be determined and then appropriate treatment could start. I say definitely go get it looked at because the likelyhood of your leg pain getting better or even staying the same is small. It is very likely to get worse. Go get checked out.

    I had this problem in my neck, c6/7. I lost all strength in my right tricep. I could not do a full push up. I Had for a while a numbness in my right hand(back side) and painful fingers when clenching a fist. I started to do partial rep push ups on my bath and isometric holds. I also found bands helped me. I was told by two Neurosurgeons that i should be operated on. I did Physio and found a Neurosurgeon who did more injection therapy. I trained myself with Dumbbells old school and am now able to press. I still have a weakness in my right arm but can live with it. No op ..
