Thread: muscle hands only....

Jim Smith at www.elitefts.com is a specialist with grip work training. Use the Q and A function and learn as much as you possibly can or just ask Jim a question directly. I am a taller athlete and can identify with your inquiry. I don't have the humungous hands that go along with the rest of my frame, but that's ok bud. Try to avoid doing work with wrist wraps and wrist straps. Use chalk and just try your best to not rely on such items as that will be a great place to start. I don't know much about you so i don't know if that applies to you but good luck with your training and give Jim a shot. Just wondering what are your goals and are you playing sports or just overall training needs?

Post #3 was the only good advice you recieved in this thread.

You can not make your hands bigger or more 'manlier' by using fat bar, grip work, sand digs, or wanking off a lion - they will just make your grip stronger (make your forearms bigger), or in the last case, get you killed.

If you want your hands to get bigger, you need to take HGH (Human growth hormone). Which, by the way, is very expensive and will also make your head, nose & feet bigger.

P.S - My dad is also 6' and i'm 5'8" with girlish hands, I am guessing this is down to poor nutrition and low test levels when I was developing - I just sat at a computer playing world of warcraft 12+ hours a day from 15 - 18 years old.

Post 3 and 36 have to be jokes. Do not use drugs as your correction to such a problem. That adds a lot of credibility to the board, thanks a lot guys. There were some good posts, choose wisely and i wish you luck. Do not take the drugs mentioned with the hand and grip work that you're talking about.

Become a butcher (meat cutter), I have hands that have always looked too big for my body. Plus you get access to all the protien you need. Really, I had bigger hands when I was younger and worked out more. They will get bigger as you become bigger. Do dumbell rows without straps, or maybe one exercise on back day without straps. Don't do them all without straps because your back will suffer until your hands become stronger. Plus work forearms more. Let the bar curl down to the last joint of your fingertips before closing your hands again and completeing the rep.

He wants his hands and fingers to be BIGGER/THICKER. Grip training does not do this, it makes your grip stronger.

The ONLY WAY to make your HANDS or FINGERS BIGGER & THICKER is using growth hormone.

YES they are strong, I have callouses all over them along with decent forearms. But my hands & fingers have not got more muscular/bigger/thicker AT ALL, and they never will.

    Right back at you.

well mabye you will always have thin hands. But I don't think growth hormone is the answer. Next time someone thinks you have small hands shake theirs and then give them a good squeeze. Trust me having thick hands are not all what they are cut out to be. You lose dexerity and have a hard time texting, typing, ect. Sometimes I wish my hands didn't look like meat hooks and I could move them easier. Also mabye mine are larger because I have been doing heavy physical labour for 20+ years, and was also about 40 pounds heavier during my peak of training about 12 years ago. Try doing dumbell pull up with 140 lbs without a strap? (Took a little layoff from the weights)

shrugs will make them thicker. I read the legendary ed coan doesnt like shrugs because they thicken your hands and make it hard to grip the bar when you deadlift.

Never heard of that one before. But I guess if you use straps when you deadlift it wouldn't matter?

just like any other form of training, if your grip becomes stronger, will not the small muscles of the hand become larger with this increase in strength??????????

Thats what I figured? But I guess on some people it does not work?? Mabye in 10 years or so of hard work they will get bigger, but like calves big hands don't grow very easily. I guess you could always use growth hormone, lol

Use different methods to get your grip stronger, and work your grip with varied grasps. For example, holding a 45 pound late with your fingers will have your fingers close together, and then next time holding a dumbbell by the end, where the hand is opened to a much greater degree.

Gaining significant muscle mass throughout your body is the most surefire way IMO. Think of it this way, have you ever seen a 150 pound guy with 20 inch upper arms? (WITHOUT ABUSING SYNTHOL LOL) No. Ever seen a 250+ pound BBer with 14 inch upper arms, me either.

One fact is, you might never get massive hands. Genetics will always play as a limiting factor. Just be patient and keep working.

MAYBE TRY THE HAND GRIPS? I SEE EM AT WAL-MART. YOU JUST SQUEEZE EM. NOT SURE IF THEY WILL GET BIGGET THOUGH AND IT REALLY DOESNT HAVE MUCH TO DO WITH BODY TYPE. DANTE CULPEPER IS 6'5 260 POUNDS AND HIS BIGGEST PROBLEM IS SMALL HANDS.

While there are many exercises you can do to increase the strength of your hands (thickbar, plate pinching, steel bending, grippers, etc), chances are you're not going to significantly increase the thickness of your hands. If you do see an increase in the thickness of your hands it will be in the thumb pad which can be worked with exercises like pinching and titan's telegraph key. I've been doing direct grip work (and lifting without straps) for the past five years and I have not seen a dramatic increase in the size of my hands even though I have gotten stronger.
