I had an issue back in 06 where my pec "locked up" at the end of a set of wide grip smith bench presses. It bruised in what looked like one striation going horizontally over my chest. I had to take 2-3 months off, but it doesn't seem like anything terrible happened. Scary though.

I remember seeing pics of Matt Burzacott's pec and it looked like the mafia put a hit out on his arm pit.

lol . . . yeah mine bruised pretty bad. Not as bad as some other guy that put his pics up here.

You probably had a slight tear or strain. You're lucky it wasn't worse. Be careful dude. I was always VERY careful when benching and I still tore mine.

You can tear any muscle. Some have a higher chance then others. Warming up and lifting properly and not doing 1 rep maxes all the time limit the chance of a tear. For instance I partially tore my bicep throwing a football.

all the more reason to be mindful of what the fuck your doing.

heavy weights do not equal greater muslce mass. I stick with my high reps, I used to powerlift, but now I'm content with my pussy weights

this is a good example of what my doctor was telling me. Sometimes shit just happens. He said one of the bear's players he operated on tore his bicep going up to catch a pass. I asked him about it and he said they keep track of wind mph, field temperature, barometric pressure, all kinds of different variables and he said usually there is no rhyme or reason... shit just happens.

I say this because people always will look at someone who tears their pec and say "oh he was using bad form" or "he wasn't doing it right" etc etc. Thinking it can't happen to ME. You are kidding yourself. When I was researching pec tears after it happen I came across people who had torn it doing 15 rep sets, one guy tore his doing PUSH UPS! If you think it can't happen to you then you are out of your mind. Using good form helps, warming up and stretching helps, but there is no sure fire way to prevent injury... sometimes 'shit just happens'. With me there was absolutely no warning. No pain, nothing. It tore in a split second

I will say that BB bench press is how about 95% of pec tears occur. And usually it's using the bodybuilding style bench with arms flared out, it places a lot more stress on the tendon than any other exercise. I suggest keeping your elbows tucked and DO NOT USE A WIDE GRIP!

    Good Luck wth recovery Layne.

    One word: WOW on powerlifts....

As a question of curiosity, do you have a recovery schedule or a set of guidelines you're trying to follow..? Eg. I want to ....(insert goal) at this point in time etc.....

I tore mine doing incline bb presses. I heard about someone who tore a pec while deadlifting. Higher reps with good form is the best way to avoid injury. While it may be true that someone tore a pec doing pushups, the vast majority happen with low reps and heavy weight (or an extreme force applied to the muscle).
My scar is about 1/2-3/4 inch thick and six inches long. I'm hoping it fades with time. I thought I was seeing the best ortho surgeon in the area but now that I've seen photos of other pec surgeries I'm a little pissed at the job he did.
