Hey Layne, I've been battling with this question for ages. I'm a pro wrestler and I have to look great because in a sense the wrestling ring is my bodybuilding stage lol My nutrition is perfect as well as my calories and am currently using your updated PHAT routine and am getting great results. My question however is recovery. I sometimes train in pro wrestling/mix martial arts training on my rest days but I was wondering if it will effect my gains & recovery if I replace a rest day with a wrestling/mma training day. The training day for wrestling/mma is very intense and usually last about 2-3 hours. I am just afraid it will interfere with my Bodybuilding gains if I lose that extra day of rest. Will it even have that much of an impact? Thank you so much for for your advice!

Hey Layne, hope you're doing alright man, i've got a question, i'm wanting to focus more on cutting my bodyfat at the moment so i can be in better shape for the coming months but i'm having trouble and can't seem to drop the fat. I've modified my diet and still no change, i'm having 5 or 6 simple meals with the protein, fat and carbs i need i tried lowering the carb intake and no luck. What other advices would you give me? I'm doing about 4 days a week of cardio, roughly 30 min cardio sessions and i'm hitting each muscle twice a week pretty intense and heavy lifting, no strength has gone down at the moment. Let me know, thanks

    Hi Layne

What are your general thoughts on Acetyl L-Carnitine?

    Is it useful or useless?

    Default Jon Fitch??

Hi Layne, as a fellow MMA fan I was wondering what your take was on Jon Fitch and other MMA fighters turning practically vegan for nutitional reasons? Jon has been saying he's only on 90g of protein a day, wtf! I'm a long time fan of yours and I follow your reccomendations for diet and training, I know MMA is very different to bodybuilding and powerlifting, but I can't get my head round his thinking. So I'm sitting at home watching ufc 127 and I was thinking that Jon actually looks pretty skinny having lost noticable muscle mass and how can 90g of protein be enough for a guy who walks around at 180+lbs and trains as intesley as he does?

layne, is there any point on focusing on lagging bodyparts during a cut since you will not be gaining any new muscle?

I was cringing everytime I heard him talk about nutrition. I like Fitch as a person, but he has no idea what the f*** he was talking about, and I too thought he looked significantly smaller

hey guys, I know I'm backed up on questions so I apologize for that. I was traveling all weekend to speak for the National Dairy Council at their symposium as a guest speaker in San Francisco so I got a bit backed up and then on the flight home last night I came down with some bad food poisoning and have been bed ridden pretty much all day. Tomorrow I leave again for Columbus for the Arnold, so it might be til next week when I can finish up the questions

For those of you attending the Arnold...

I apologize for waiting til the last minute to make this post but I wanted to be sure of my responsibilities before I did so. Isabel and I WILL be attending the Arnold Classic Expo this year. You will be able to find me at the Scivation booth on the following days & hours

Friday: 11 am to 4 pm
Saturday: 3 pm to 5 pm
Sunday: 11 am to 3 pm

I will be taking a lunch break at some point on Friday & Sunday so if you go to the booth and I'm not there, it's likely I'll be back shortly.

For those who are interested I will be selling my DVD, Layne Norton Unleashed, at the expo for a discount ($25 cash only). I will also have pictures on hand to sign for those who are interested. I am looking forward to meeting new faces and chatting with old friends so please stop by the booth and say hi!

Layne, are you going to bring any pictures from your last contest to sign for fans? Would love to get one and frame it on my wall if possible. See you soon!

    BACKGROUND:

I am above 20% body-fat weighing in around 285lbs (with a decent amount of muscle), and I am just beginning my journey to shed the fat and show off the muscle.

    QUESTIONS:

    (1) I have used John Romaniello's calorie calculator to determine my daily caloric intake (it has me at 2,200 maintenance; 2,300 on workout days; 1,700 on non-workout days), what is your opinion on that caloric intake at my bodyweight?

    (2) using the same calculator (it has me at slightly below 100g of carbs on non-workout days and slightly above 150 on workout days), is this sufficient?

    (3) I know that you are not a proponent of fasted cardio, what basic cardio plan would you recommend for someone who has a substantial amount of fat to lose?

    (4) if someone cannot afford BCAAs, but still wanted to try your method of CHO&BCAA in between protein feedings, is the CHO still recommend even without the BCAA (or should it be dropped altogether)?

Thanks in advance! I greatly appreciate your advice!

Layne, what's your opinion on carb cut offs? There has been a huge discussion on bb.com fourms with a few people including a few natty pro's bashing chris aceto for his theory on no carbs before bed. Do you think that say eatin 150g of oats earlier in the day will lead to better fatloss than when eating the same meal at bedtime due to blunted GH release? Both diets the exact same macros!!

i do not believe in carb cut offs. nothing about nighttime changes the laws of thermodynamics. you should distribute your carbs according to when you workout

Ok i never verified say you workout afternoon so no need for carbs really at night on a cut, will you not blunt your GH before bed therefor meaning less fatloss at night, yes you still have the same overall calories but for example when you eat carbs fat burning slows down due to the release of insulin, so with this blunted GH before bed you will not burn fat optimally?

    Hey Layne!
Let me start by saying that you are an inspiration to all natural bodybuilders! I really enjoyed reading your story, and I have read most of your articles on bodybuilding.com. I am planning to compete in a natural bodybuilding competition, and I have a question for you.

My body responds best to HIT, such as 1-2 warm up sets and one working set to failure. Now that I am trying to lean out, is there any need to change my workout? This sounds like a stupid question, but I only ask because I have leaned out pretty good before using a basic 3x10 workout. However, I would really like to stick with HIT for my prep. If necessary, I could give you my set/rep/frequency scheme. Thanks!
