Pull ups are a great way to get the back working! But I have the same problem and never was very strong at them...so I would usually start my day off with pull ups and do 50 reps...but not all at once, just do as many as I could for however many sets it took.

I was always strong at them, I have no problems doing pullups and chin ups. Holding a peak contraction and slow movement

according to charles poliquin:
As for increasing the number of pull-ups, the time under tension principle always works. If you can only do 3 pull-ups by yourself, you do 3, then on the third you try to lower yourself for 30 seconds. Also, if you can only do 3 reps, then do 10 sets of 3 reps. (And as always, those Gravitron-style machines are a waste of time.)
Another system I use is I do 10 sets of the exercise. If you can do 6 pull-ups by yourself, divide that by two, so that's 3 pull-ups. Do 10 sets of 3. In the next workout you try to increase the total number of reps until you can do 10 sets of 6. The day you can do 10 sets of 6 then you'll be able to do 12 by yourself. I've seen people do that in three weeks.
Another method is to shoot for a number, say 30. Do as many sets as it takes to get 30 reps and see how long it takes you. Then, the next time you do 30, try to beat that time.

I'm alright at everyone of those besides pull-ups/chin-ups. I looked up some information about how I can work up to the exercise. I found that assisted pull-ups/chin-ups helps. I've been doing these for a week and notice a difference. I was wondering if anybody ever went down the same road getting themselves ready for pull-ups/chin-ups. I figure I probably wont being doing those type of exercises in the Army but I still want to be prepared for anything lol.

Bwahahahaha
That was a laugh...anyway the best way of getting good is by being consistant, doing them every week, you may only do 2 correct chins/pull-up but aim for in two weeks time to do 5 etc etc.
lots of practice

I just can't recommend the Army. Not that you're asking for my advice but if you're gonna make a big decision, I feel you should get as many opinions as possible.
Otherwise if I were to join now, I'd go Coast Guard or Air Force. But that's me. Shorter deployments too.
Best of luck man!

1) try doin negatives on the chinup bar starting from the top. 2) do 1-2 sets of chins/pullups evn when its not back day . 3) go for say 30 reps and do as many sets as it takes to get there whether it be 4 sets or 10 sets of 3 then try to improve reps every time out.

I suck at them presently as well, but keep doing them. Last time prior to going back to them I hadn't done bodyweight chins since I was aorund the 200 mark. Now 248 so you can figure out the rest

CHEAT!
i know exactly what you are going through. I could only to 12 regular pull ups, but once someone tought me how to kipp, i got 35 (safe freaking day) The army doesn;t care how you get up to that bar as long as you do.
I know this is a bodybuilding site, and i KNOW this is not a proper chin up, there is next to no benefit strength wise doing them this way. But if you want to throw up some decent numbers, have a look into learning these.
basically use momentum on the way up. and throw your hips forward on the way down. like a swing motion. Took me a couple tried to figure it out.

Well if you had something to go back too, I can understand. For me I can see the Army being a career for me right now.
