No real need for teenagers to be hitting weights hard. I know I did a lot of joint damage lifting to the max from 13 years old.

Play team sports etc as a teen, learn to be a well adjusted human first and not a little boy in a gorilla suit
No need to start bodybuilding until hitting 18 years old and then go for it.

That bbing bug is nothing like team sports! I loved baseball and part of me wishes I would have kept playiing but I stopped at 16 and did my first show and the rush from that stage and crowd is something intoxicating. Better than hitting a HR or throwing someone out from left field.

I over trained, didnt eat enough and competed too much as a teen but the memories I made, and experience was something I will never forget.

Why within our community we continue to perpetuate these senseless prepects?

There are no universal rules about what age is the best to start lifting weights.

Let the boys decide what sport they want to practice, weight training is no different from other activities.

That’s EXACTLY how I felt in the shows I did when I KNEW absolutely I had done literally everything in my power to look the best I possibly could.

I remember my second show competing down in the Mr Wales, backstage I was posing in the mirror, tan and glaze all perfect, condition was bang on and I said to my friend “mate, I could go pop my clothes back on right now, go sit in the audience and I’d feel happy”.

Had a lot of stress on that prep and just to even make it to that point in time was satisfying enough. Of course, I competed, took 2nd in a decent lineup, back in my home country after 5 years away, my friends supporting me there, I even beat a guy that years before I used to admire his physique in one of the gym’s I trained in as a teenager.

A great, great weekend and a wonderful experience all round.

I'm almost 51. It's 5:40am here on a Saturday. I'm sitting here getting some food in me before I head to the gym to train back. I'm reading your post and Im ready to run through the damn wall. It's like I'm standing there backstage with you and witnessing your experience. Thanks for this. Better than any preworkout.

Applying THAT level of discipline that I’d never really had to implement in any area of my life before, was VERY rewarding. It changed me in ways I am so thankful for today.

Lots of people can say they are a bodybuilder. They train with weights and eat some foods and take some aupps and maybe even take some super supps. People in the gym tell them all the time, "you'd crush em onstage. You would beat those guys". And that 9s where it ends for the vast majority of those bodybuilders.

The truth is that's not being a competitive bodybuilder. Committing to, prepping for, competing in, and accepting the judges result of a sanctioned bodybuilding competition is a different animal. It takes risk to your ego, sacrifice of your comfort and convenience, and a true accounting for what your efforts have produced.

For many, the assigned value to themselves that comes from the validation and worship of.gym goers will forever prevent them from getting onstage (I can't risk losing their belief in me or my belief in myself by not winning). So they continue banging weights and loving the bodybuilding lifestyle - and there is nothing wrong with that.

However, there is a revealing, perspective giving, mental and emotional growth that occurs by taking the journey of competitive bodybuilding. It is a combined battle of you against you and you against them (them being your competition, your rivals, your associations with people that don't believe in you. And when you take that on, and push on through. And take the risk - you become something more than you would have been. It is something that no one can ever take from you. It also forma a bond with others that have made similar journeys.

Not all shows are like this, but one the best feelings is when you compete in a show where there is genuine comraderie and positive healthy competition. There is something rewarding at a higher level when you compete to be your best and everyone else does and encourages and congratulates and supports.

There are some many aspects to this sport but that feeling is the single best feeling I have experienced with bodybuilding.

For my first ever show, not even when I was in first callout & out right in the centre did I not know that I was making a complete fool of myself by finally competing and looking terrible.

But following through on anything, especially one like a show prep where you put in that much time, money & effort, is SO important!

For the entire 13 weeks prep there was a HUGE guy in my gym that said he was doing the same contest as me, same class. I had to look at him every week thinking “how on earth can I stand onstage next to him, he is a monster!”

In the final few weeks, one night I saw him on the treadmill in a vest, he had shrank away to a fraction of the size and I was told that on the morning of the contest, he pulled out!
