  • Fanboy Moments

We are superfans when it comes to this shit. But even after following this sport since 87, I still have "OH SHIT" moments when i see a pro at a show. I can't tell you how many times ive texted Chris or Derek Johnson saying, "I just saw so and so". Every time I see Lenda, Lee Haney, Shawn Ray or Cormier, I tap my wife and tell her!! She then tells me to not be weird! At Tampa last year Nathalia sat next to me during some of the prejudging and her quad have like NO fat and im FOCUSING so hard on that stage and not gawking at her! HAHAHAHAH. But seeing those guys we grew up seeing in the mags is such a trip still to this day!!!

But the ULTIMATE fanboy moment was when I sat next to Peter during prejudging of a bikini and got to interrogate him about what it was like at Weider back in the day. Questions ive had for 30 years were answered and I had goosebumps!!! Told about when he saw Sergio, and how Flex would always be late to a photo shoot.

          Been there , done that

I was like a teenage girl meeting Elvis when I met King Kimali back in 2000 . "F'n King Kamali and I'm all gaga LOL.
I was judging the NPC La state and King was a rising star in the IFBB ranks . He'd peak in 2001 , and quickly crash and burn, but I digress
The promoter made the La state a weekend-long "event" and King was guest posing with Jay Cutler .

At the friday night weigh in, the promoter walked over and introduced me to King and his lady Barbara.
He shook my hand and invited me to join them at their table. I graciously accepted and sat down.

King was very friendly , open and even pointed over to Jay across the room .
He remarked that Jay was a future Mr O , but as big as he was , Ronnie was on a level above that.

He looked me straight in the eye and said ; " I hope to make my mark, but I could never match up with Ronnie."
I was impressed, how well spoken and realistic King was as a new pro.
He was pretty confident that his unique posing would help gain him fans, even if he never won a major pro contest.

Later that weekend, my lifelong bro , Bix was trying to get a candid pic of King in the hotel hallway.
Bix kept asking him to flex his biceps and let him get a good pic. King just wanted to get back to his room and sleep.
King shook his head, waved him off , laughed and called him a stalker.
Bix is my bro, and I have his back , but that was pretty funny overall, all things considered
I saw a star, reached for it...and MISSED

My ex-wife saw me at contests and expos with my old bro Bix.
She said we acted like star struck little boys , meeting superman LOL.

I had to divorce her... with that mature, sensible attitude .

No she's mature...she just hasn't seen me with a fellow schmoe , stalking pros at an expo...yet
BUT, if she sees me with the Mayor at a contest expo, it's another divorce for ol' Howard

I remember seeing Dorian and Flex Lewis before they made it to the big time. Ian Harrison though was the most impressive 21 year old I have ever seen.

I have seen Dorian quite a few time since but only spoke to once about 7 or 8 years ago. Before that he just seemed unapproachable, he had a menace about him.

Flex Lewis was a star from the start.

I'd love to talk to Haney

Never met Ian Harrison at any expo meet/greet, but I briefly spoke with Yates .
He grunted thanks when he signed a pic I purchased at his expo booth.
His assistant told me to ; " Move along now fella " in his British pirate voice , so I moved .

I had a decent conversation with Flex Lewis at the Jar Nats in Chattanooga , summer 2021.
Smart, friendly chap who seemed happy to move on to promoting his Dragon's Lair gyms and related business.
Had to be the most "together" pro I've actually spoken with, besides Jay Cutler .

Dorian was not known for being the most chatty, approachable sort.

Ronnie, on the other hand, I interacted with and observed many times during and after his time, his attitude and genuine appreciation to fans always impressed me.

Funnily enough, Jay wasn’t that friendly when he was competing. He’s super nice now, but my experience when I met him at the 2001 Olympia wasn’t that positive.

Levrone and Vince Taylor were amazing, spending time hanging out the days after the 1994 and 1995 British Grand Prix’s. It was Kevin in 1994 that really encouraged me to go after my dream of getting involved with bodybuilding magazines and media.

28 years later, here I am talking to you idiots ha ha. Yayyyy.
