  • Round metal plates

In the short list of things that would make me extremely happy on a daily basis - old school round metal plates rank high.

Guys from older gyms or that have been around for a while can relate. Nothing like the signature sound when walking into the gym like the clang and rattle of round metal plates.

Whether guys used collars or not, inevitably there would be some space where those babies would start banging around and you knew shit was going down. It was like am amplifier for your internal intensity meter.

Regardless if it was topping out on a rep for heavy squats, or the bang at the bottom and then rattle at he top of hard deadlifts, a bar going from chest to extension for bench or the shorter up and down of shrugs - it was like an auditory calling to your hardcore alter ego. Now add in a slight haze of chalk, some loud and hard charging music, and a leg day or back day on the docket and I may be dead and in Heaven.

    Good things

Not fan when the plates rattle because my locks on the dumbbells aren't good enough.

Hahaha I just had flashbacks to drop sets on an old Cybex leg extension.

Is there more than one Powerhouse in town Mike? I'll look for the one you are talking about when I head down this summer to visit a friend that recently moved there

Three are two. The HUGE one that is right by the airport, which is something you HAVE to see. They play the old Battle for The Olympia's on the TVs and EVERYONE trains hard!!! Great vide and great atmosphere.

The one i was talking about is about 35 minutes from there. Hit me up when you head down and I can give you the address!!!

In my gym I go hunting for the metal plates when I’m using free weights.

The rubber ones are not as cool.

Ask Tom Platz, the sound of clanking metal weights gave that guy rushes every time.

I am very susceptible to noise and bothers me too much, but I should be loving the sound of iron.

Funny, thinking about this brought back a memory of something simple that I loved at an old Powerhouse I trained at (and even Lifetime when I first joined).

It was a Cybex raised platform. I know - anticlimactic - but it was great for doing bent barbell rows, stiff deadlifts, and even shrugs. It has waist high uprights that had short hooks for a bar to rest on or you could put a full catch bar on instead (for doing shrugs etc)
