just curious to see what everyone takes in post workout during contest prep. i myself have been having whey (50 protein) and oats (75 carbs). what's everyone else take for protein, carbs, etc?

I have 1 scoop of whey after training but before cardio, 1 scoop of MHP Probolic sr straight after cardio and 1 scoop (30g) of Vitago then to finish i have 24oz of water to wash it all down.. About 1.5 hrs-2 i have my last meal which is cod or hadock with veg.

Are you doing cardio to lose any fat, because if you are you are creating a great difficulty by drinking the whey as it causes a very high insulin spike.

In reply to Tipsta's quote, I had'nt relised that whey cause such a high insulin spike( you learn something each day, thanks bro) and was undoing all that fat burning hard work. After seeing you response I have plaid this to my advantage by downing all protein after my cardio but before my vitargo as I am making good use of your Vanadyl Sulphate and chromium Polnicotinate info.

the small insulin spike you get from whey is insignificant when it comes to fat loss, and there's some research to suggest that spiking insulin post-workout with whey and carbs actually increases fat burning over time
if it facotrs into your daily caloric alottment then you're fine

Changes as prep progresses but it initiall starts with:
IMMEDIATELY POST WORKOUT (Begin drinking before last 2 sets and finish after last set): 20 Grams WMS, 7 Grams BCAA, & Grams Glutamine, w/ 5 Grams MOno
- DC Stretch
30-min later: 60 Grams WMS, 40 grams Whey

Actually you are incorrect. You might want to do some research on Chuck Rudolph of Scivation as he is the master with insulin threshold control and he has stated that adding whey to certain carbs INCREASES the insulin spike. Whey is the highest insulin releasing protein due to its large concentration of BCAA's. Leucine mainly. As is red meat for this very reason. I use whey as a protein with diabetics to drop blood sugars at a higher rate. Very effective!
Any food that causes insulin to release will hinder any fat loss attempts. Especially when taken before cardio. Is cardio upon rising on empty stomach not something you have heard of?

what is a good alternative PWO for protein? or is Whey coupled with a complex carb like oats ideal for those seeking fat loss?
actually Chuck is one guy with an opinion which the research shows is not 100% correct. his theories are interesting and I do believe insulin control is important, but insulin release at normal levels will not cause any significant hinderance to fat loss. if this were the case then eating carbs or whey protein at all during prep would completely blunt fat mobilization and utilization
spiking insulin uncontrollably will have a negative effect, but the small response from things like whey protein and a small post-workout feeding with mixed carbs will not as long as the environment for such a feeding is warrented, i.e. post-workout and first thing in the morning, if low intense cardio isn't your thing (an entirely different thread in and of itself)
besides, the benefits of the insulin response post-workout far outweight the possible extra fat burning capabilities that blunting insulin might theoretically cause
blanket statements like "Any food that causes insulin to release will hinder any fat loss attempts" is far too black and white while ignoring the grey areas

I think it depends on where you're at with your fat loss goals and how well your body tolerates carb intake
if you have more endo tendencies and you have a lot to lose, you probably don't need a fancy post-workout feeding...just eat your next meal.
if you're more ecto and are very lean but lose muscle easy, it would be wise to have something quick like whey and insulin secreting carbs and then focusing on stablizing blood sugar levels the rest of the day
then there are various body types and situations in between that could call for differing protocols
