its good to experiment with machines and push them as hard as possible when injured. The smith machine at my other gym has stoppers that can be set an inch or two above the chest. I use those to avoid that extra stretch at the bottom and is easier on my shoulders.

      • 11-09-09 Back And Abs (15 mins cardio)

        Low volume
        Low intensity
        Light weight

Maintenance back routine. Since biceps tendon was still strained I kept it light. Even did a dropset which I never use for back.

Finished the back portion in one hour. Usually back is 4+ hours for me easy. Was just experimenting with the idea of more work in less time as a form of progressive resistance. Might have to incorporate something like that since my back is way too strong for the bicep tendons. Also did slower more deliberate reps and held many contractions.

Tendon was still a little bit sore on some sets, so cut those short. :

        (201 lbs after buffet)

Lost my records so this is all from memory:

        Wide Grip Chin Ups:

        40 (PR)
        20
        15
        ?? (Dont remember)

        Low Cable Rows:

        210x20-25 (warm)
        225x31 (PR)
255x12-16 (Tendon strain so not to failure)

        Dropset: (No rest between sets)

        225x15-20
        195x10
        165x8
        135x5

        Hoist Lat Pulldowns:

        113x20 (warm)
        1??x? (No memory)
        165x15 ?

(Back completed within an hour today)

        Decline Sit Ups:

50 reps with 25 lb plate on chest
        50

Maximum Decline Sit Ups: ( Very steep)

        17 ?

        (15 mins cardio)

For me, when it comes to presses, I dont do machines as my main movement unless absolutely neccesary. I just dont get sore on them, no matter how much I tear it up, what I try. I think that the extra stabilization muscle used on the freeweight versions tears it up much more.

This is what I noticed with myself though. As well as a huge decrease in chest size when doing machines for only a few weeks. Especially the upper chest.

So I always try to do machines secondary to the free weight incline or flat bench. I also feel that I get the best chest stimulation and growth off of free weight incline barbell.

Machines make great finishers for me though. I do them after my shoulders get too strained to continue with freeweight

            • yeah, if i use free weights and really push it, my shoulders will start to hurt during the sets, and the next day my deltoids are sore, but not in a good way. it hurts so bad its hard to move my arms above parallel.

i worked out chest yesterday and i am a lil sore. def been sorer before. but ill take slow growth over no growth, ya know? i tried to do a set of d.bell presses and i knew right away i was not going to be able to do it.

40 Chinups !! That's impressive! Do you ever do pullups w/ overhand grip?
Have you ever competed, and if not, would you like to?

Thats the best way to do it. Adapt. I did the same thing with my back and its been at its largest. So machines work. If I had no choice Id do all machine for chest too. I can still hit freeweights so Ill do it until that SHIT is killed.

Whether it be machine or freeweight, I just get extreme with whatever movment I train. If I do a certain movement over a long period of time I will usually get very strong on that movment too.

                    Appreciate that shit

Maybe I got the wording wrong. By chin up I mean wide grip overhanded, not underhanded. Underhand grip is too much on my bicep tendons. I dont do them like that anymore.

No Ive never competed and have no desire for it. I dont seek anyones approval and am not trying to look pretty or symettrical. I train for the vent mainly, and also just to be an overall freak. Ill get massive but doing things in my own "fucked up" way. I have hardly messed with AAS at this point. This is more a strength phase for me at the moment.

                    Very impressive conditioning yourself

I hated to train so light for back, but my biceps tendon was still feeling some strain.

Ive gained over 50 lbs since Ive been back from my injuries a few years ago, but still have a long way to go

I dont know when Im gonna be back into a real growth phase again. Eating has to be consistant and massive and maybe some mild cycling. Will continue to KILL THAT SHIT regardless and add strength though

Size is becoming real difficult to come by these days, but my calories are not as high and consistant as they need to be right now. My supplementation is basically only a pre workout stimulant ,creatine, beta alanine, no2, cocktail.

Its good to be back though, after those years out from my injury. So maintaining at this size for now will give me a good foundation for the next growth phase.

Its very clear that your hard work is paying off too
