Hey Jerry. Off-season is going well. This is the most muscular I've ever been in my life and my conditioning is the same (for off-season) as it usually is, so I'm happy about this.

As for the in the trenches, I spoke to Bill Comstock about it a little more than a week ago, but now that you mention thi

(this is continued about 45 minutes after what I wrote above) HAHA, WOW, what a coincidence. As I was typing this response (see above), my phone rang and what do you know, it was Bill. We just made plans to shoot an In the Trenches on Tuesday!!!!!!!!!

          • Whats up JROD, bb may be the only sport where there are not to many Rodriguez's, lol there are so many of us everywhere else! I really admire your work and how you seem to be very knowledgeable about what you do. Your thread is amazing i have read it all in the last 2 days. Your strategies on workouts and dieting are new and refreshing. I am looking forward to your new in the Trenches vid.

Do you think its a good idea to workout an hour after you eat the first meal of the day? It is a solid meal, not powder.
I want to give Dextrose a try, being that I'm 160 at about 10% bodyfat, what do you suggest my servings should be on a daily basis? If you could chime in on a range of how many total carbs i should be around on a daily basis it would help greatly also.
While I'm sure that Dave's Isolyze is a premier product it is costly for me, do you suggest any other proteins?

Thank you for your time JROD, I'm sure you will be around for long time! You have a new fan

            • Hey jrod,

The blog is great man. A lot of interesting stuff in there. What are your favorite biceps exercises? I work my biceps hard, but they constantly lag behind my triceps (which is a good bodypart for me). Do you have any advice?

When it comes to cardio for your contest prep what kind do you do and whats a general protocol regarding hours/week, session length...etc.
eventhough you dont do offseason cardio what kind would you suggest and perhaps how often/how long?

Im currently going to be moving to a different apartment in the next few months and i think im going to ditch the treadmill. As much as walking on an incline is fun i think im going to move to the Eliptical which i find is much easier on the joints, more effecient regarding calorie burning and easier to stablize my heart rate...your thoughts?

                  • Back from Southern California. The In the Trenches shoot with Bill Comstock went well. I trained legs at Gold's in Hawthorne. Afterwards I hung out with Bill and he showed me around a bit. I got to see The Firehouse, Jay Cutler's Max Muscle, Venice beach, drove by the old and new Gold's in Venice, etc. I had a great time. I'll post about it in my blog at jrod123.blogspot.com

An hour after is pretty soon, but if you can stomach it then I'd say it's fine. I usually wait about 2 hours after eating (1.5 at the earliest).

Its really hard to say what your servings SHOULD be, knowing only your weight and BF%. I don't even know if you mean having dextrose before, during, or after training; or all those times. Furthermore, when you say daily basis, it makes me think you mean you're having dextrose EVERYDAY (IE even on non-training days). I do not see a need for dextrose on off days. With that said, I would suggest the following: err on the side of too little and work your way up. This might take some trial and error. However, you'll still benefit well when guessing, as I believe you really can't go that wrong in the process. Fine tuning it (to know how much you need) just might take time.
As for overall calories, I'd say the same, start with less and work up (I'm assuming you're not getting ready for a show).

As for Isolyze being costly, let me first say something before giving you advice. If you actually do the math, gram for gram, Isolyze is cheaper than steak, chicken, fish. With that said, I respect and understand your opinion on its cost, so here's some advice about choosing a good protein powder. First of all, particularly for workout times, I'd suggest a 100% whey Isolate (next best would be a blend; the more whey isolate the better). Second, take a look at the percentage of grams of protein per scoop(the higher the better).
                      Use this formula:
#grams of protein per scoop divided by #grams per scoop (as in scoop size)
A lot of times a certain protein powder will be really cheap, but when you take a look at the percentage of grams of protein per scoop, you realize why its so cheap.

Thanks very much for the nice words. I appreciate it.

Train your biceps hard and heavy would be my advice. Also, less is more (more intesity, less volume). As for exercises, I like the basics: barbell, dumbbell, and hammer curls. I know its not a very fancy, interesting response, but it's what I believe in.

I doubt you'll ever find anyone who can curl 185lbs. with small arms.

I did a total of 11 sessions of cardio, out of 14 weeks of dieting, for the 2007 TU. I did not have a set plan of how many per week I would do. I would decided each week how much cardio to do depending on how I was looking and how things were coming along. All my sessions were between 12 and 15 minutes long. I did high intensity cardio as follows: I would choose 2 or 3 different methods of cardio ( from elliptical, stationary bike, running around the track, or the stepmill) and do 1/2 (if 2 machines) or 1/3 (if 3 machines) of the total time on each machine with about a 2-3 minute rest between. For example. One session I ran around the track for 3:15 (as quickly as it took to complete 4 laps), rested 2-3 minutes, got on the elliptical for 6 minutes (all out), rested 2-3 minutes, and finally got on the stepmill for 5 minutes.

If I were to do cardio off-season, I would still do it high intensity style. I think there is just a much greater benefit doing it this way (you just end up burning more calories the rest of the day than you normally would).

Finally, given the choice (if i couldn't have both, of course) I would choose an elliptical machine over a treadmill for a couple of reasons. First of all, for the reasons you mentioned. Second, because I could replace the treadmill by running, but I wouldn't know how to easily replace the elliptical (we don't have snow around here to go cross country skiing .

I wish. No, its about (I THINK) 7.65 laps or something close to 8 laps = 1 mile. (Its an indoor track, not the standard size).

If i did, that would be a world record:
The current world record in the mile is 3:43.13, set by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco on July 7, 1999. The current women’s record is 4:12.56 by Svetlana Masterkova of Russia, set on August 14, 1996.

                              • JROD thanks for the response, I'm sorry If I wasn't clear before, but, what I meant was taking dextrose post workout with my protein shake. I'm one of those people who doesn't notice much when it comes to supplements, seriously there is not something I can pinpoint and say, "wow, that supplement was great for me". That being said, I take the basics-Whey, Multi, Omega 3,6,Joint Formula,BCAA, and Glutamine.

How will I know If its too little or too much Dextrose to take; is starting off with 1 tsp(5 grams) to little?

I have done so many things like Vitagro, pre-workout formulas, etc. and haven't noticed a change in my physique to stay the course. I guess I need to stick to the basics and ride it out and hope my work ethic and dieting catch up to my change in physique(Arms and shoulders are my weakpoints). Maybe the Dextrose is a change in the right direction.
