Hahaha, we will see about that pro card. I've got some work to do if I want to earn one of those.
Hypothetically, though, if I EARNED and KEPT my procard (I would consider turning it down), I would consider competing in the under 202 class. I also wouldn't mind getting my asked kicked at a regular pro show; it would be a fun experience for me to just get to step on stage with IFBB pros regardless of placing. I'm never going to be the biggest guy, but I could always shoot for trying to come in as the best conditioned guy at the show (which I always do shoot for anyways); don't need drugs for that!
BTW, thanks!Jeff Rodriguez

I am going to write up a "TU wrap up" blog, where I'll go through what I did for food on Friday and Saturday, what I ate afterwards (which I keep telling you I'd respond to, but I swear I will in the wrap up), what I did for color, etc. Pretty much everything. I'll write this up on Sunday. Let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see on this blog; but I'll go through everything I can think of. Since I'm putting it off till Sunday, I'll respond to this question (color) right now:
I did two different things for pre-judging (Friday) and finals (Saturday).
Pre-judging: (in order)- (1) coat protan night before (slept with this on, the showered off next morning)
- (1) coat protan morning of
- (2) coats Jan Tana Competition Color after protan (2nd coat of Jan Tana was done backstage AT the show so that it wouldn't rub off)
It rained REALLY hard the night of pre-judging. It was about a 10 block walk from the venue to the hotel and, without an umbrella, I got SOAKED. The rain washed off a lot of the color (didn't care, though, was probably going to rinse anyways.
- After a natural, rain rinse of color the night before, i showered more of the color off.
- (3) coats of protan before going to venue
- (1) "sprayed on" coat protan backstage. Sprayed on (not brushed) with the pump spray that protan comes in. My girlfriend would just swipe and spray to kind of mist the protan on me (made a slightly bit darker; nothing dramatic, though).
In the future, I will do one of the following, in order of which I think is best:
1) get a professional spray tan (everyone that was spray tanned looked awesome!
2) use Jan Tana High Definition Color. (this is the stuff used when people get sprayed). It comes in a pump bottle and dispenses like a foam/mousse. Bill Moschelle (welterweight winner) let me use some of his. I tried it on the back of my hand and it gives a nice, deep, dark mahogany color
3) Good old protan! (or protan + dyoderm like i used in previous years).Jeff Rodriguez

Jeff, you're a great asset to natural bodybuilding. It's really unbelievable that for someone so young you've accomplished what you have, and by sharing your knowledge with your fans you do a great job in promoting the sport we all love.
I really hope we can be on "Team USA" and represent in Bahrain this fall. No matter the outcome, it would be a blast to embody what true naturals can bring to the world stage.
(Hopefully) See you soon -
Tim Martin
Hopefully I can follow in your footsteps and win the overall one day...
For now, as you mentioned, I hope to see you Bahrain!

good luck with whatever comes next - Bahrain or the offseason.
Thanks, Brian. It was good hanging out with you; wish we got to hang out more after the show. Next year...
Good luck with your off-season; I'll be "semi" dieting for now.Jeff Rodriguez

Jeff (when you have the time), what is your range of motion like on barbell and DB shoulder presses? Your delts/shoulders are very impressive.
Also, have you ever experimented with a higher carb diet before? Is the reason you like the huge amount of protein simply because of water retention and therefore giving the appearance of being leaner or do you actually notice muscle loss when you go lower? It's just hard to grasp why you would need that much.
I used to intake a lot (50% of diet), but than changed to a higher carb intake instead due to studies, etc. and didn't really notice much of a difference. Though, if I had the cash maybe I would go higher protein for the reason I mentioned above (water retention and the illusion of being leaner).Last edited by Fitzchivalry; September 12, 2008, 03:11 PM.

Jeff,
I hope you have enjoyed a little break from your diet and/or training. I am patiently waiting for you blog post. Also, I would like to make a suggestion. Could you post any discoveries you have made on your journey? For example, is there something new you tried and felt really helped you.... Or is there something you still don't feel is working for you to get into the ultimate shape while maintaining muscle. I am certain you reflect on the things that worked or did not work for you.
Does that make any sense?
Thanks.

Congratulations bro! You looked great. We didnt formally meet but my name is Justin (actually I think I introduced myself to you when we spoke breifly after the prejudging), I did the prejudging play by play with Dave. We spoke briefly after the prejudge and I told you that you had your class and you said "I hope you're right"....well thankfully I was because you deserved it for sure! Congrats on a great win. ;-)

As for the higher carb diet, do you mean off season or pre contest? For pre-contest, I ate about as much this year as last year in terms of carbs; I've tried higher.
MY reason for eating so much protein has nothing to do with water retention. My reason for eating so much comes from trial and error. I've found a correlation between how much/quickly I make improvements and how much protein I eat. I'm sure there's a point where I'm just eating more than I need (and I probably do). But, if I'm going to get too many calories from carbs, protein, or fat, I'd rather get too many from protein.Jeff Rodriguez

Let me know if there's something I didn't cover.
I mentioned this in my blog, but I think the biggest thing I learned is that I wish I had more contest experience.Jeff Rodriguez
