how's the HIIT feel on no carbs?
As I said before I only added about half the normal keto fats in, and there were several days thrown in where I had basically none.

I don't do HIIT (interval), just HIT (max effort the whole time). It sucks!

    • Here's my thoughts on the IFBB Europa Battle of Champions from this past weekend. This turned out to be the hardest prep I've ever done, I felt physically and emotionally drained for many of the weeks leading up to the show. There's a difference training for a contest you hope to win and training for one where you have no idea how you'll stack up. People outside our little bodybuilding community have no idea about drug-free/anything goes contests, and as those who compete in open shows know it's just too exhausting to even attempt an explanation.

As for the show, I had some logistical challenges in Connecticut, but felt good about making weight at 201.8 lbs. Thursday evening. In fact, the only two competitors who had to strip down to their trunks were David Henry and me, and Friday night I was a dry 206.5 lbs.. Of course I drew the number directly behind David Henry, so during initial quarter-turns I was next to him. The prejudging callouts on Friday night were strange, with an initial five called out (not me), then Jose Raymond and David Henry put back with Guy Cisternino added to the three left on stage. Finally the remaining five were called with me in the center numerically. One of my goals going into the show was to compared with Guy and Wendell Floyd, so after prejudging I was a little upset that didn't happen. They had a videographer running digital loop of the contest on Saturday so I was able to watch prejudging. I was pleased with how I compared with my callout, so realistically I expected to land in seventh. After the posing routines I actually left to drive back to New Jersey as I had already checked out of the hotel and was exhausted. In this show the top three were to be re-judged prior to the awards, but the last thing I wanted to do was to sit through bikini and figure at that point. When I arrived home later that night I was shocked to see that I ended up in fourth place, missing an Olympia qualification by one placing!

So in the end I'm ecstatic with my placing and truly don't think I could look any better at 202, in fact one of my dilemmas going into the show was if doing the 202 was the right "strategy", as there is very little time to carb up between weigh-in and prejudging, as I'd rather be coming down in weight into the contest. With that said, I don't know what the future holds for me. I'm completely satisfied with fourth place in an IFBB contest, and know that I'm too tall for that class to ever win. That leaves the "open" IFBB, which is maybe an even bigger challenge, even though a guy like Troy Alves does well and is not the biggest guy on stage. So for now I'm going to sit back and get fat, bust my ass in the gym and continue to "bodybuild" because it's what I do.

          2. Whatever the most intense form of lifting is, that's what I believe in. Whether it's explosive motion for max weight or super-strict with no momentum and deep squeeze, you'll know intensity when you do it.

          3. I truly believe all diets work if you restrict calories enough. This year I did high protien, low fat, pretty low carbs for 13 weeks, then at three weeks out I cut carbs completely and only added a little fat (about half the amount on a typical keto formula). I also doubled my cardio and tightened up considerably.

          4. No, never tried it.
          Tim,
Thanks for the help. I checked out all the pics and you looked awesome man! I found a website telling the nutritional value of deer (venison) if you want to look at it. The reason I asked about it was my family are big deer hunters and they give me alot every year, so i just wanted to get you opinion on it as a good protein source. Again thanks for your time and help! I'm sure I'll have more questions later but until then keep it up and I wish you the best of luck on your off season training.

Half steppin' / half reppin' might be how they do it down in retirement country, but here in Jerzee we go balls out! Seriously, I'll miss our workouts, I doubt I'll find anyone else with the same drive as you.

For 2010 I did 20 minutes of high intensity cardio and started double sessions a few weeks out. I'm not one of those guys who believes cardio (specifically stairmill) makes your legs thin, but I will say the second cardio - post lifting - was grueling because at that point I was on zero carbs. I'm ashamed to say I haven't done a minute of cardio since July but am happy with my "offseason" condition because I've been eating very clean. If I compete again I'll probably do a mix of high and low intensity cardio, along with cycling my carbs. As for competing, the only show I'm considering is the Flex Pro in February, but am waiting to see if I'm re-signed by Six Star Pro Nutrition, as well as planning for our expected twins in April.
