  • Matt Serra

UFC President Dana White announced Thursday that Matt Serra will have to withdraw from the UFC 79 card due to an injury he suffered after his training earlier this week.

The current UFC welterweight champion, who was scheduled to fight Matt Hughes at UFC 79, suffered a herniated disc in his lower back on Monday following a routine training session in his Long Island gym.

“This is devastating news because they were so looking forward to fighting each other, said White.

“Unfortunately injuries happen and I look forward to Serra recovering quickly, and to getting him back into the Octagon.”

Serra had just finished a Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling training session and was demonstrating a move when he became gripped with pain and fell to the floor. Serra went to the hospital and underwent an MRI, which revealed the herniated discs in his lower back.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Serra. “I’ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off of the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I’m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday – All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.”
No timetable has been released for Serra's recovery and replacement bouts have yet to be determined.

i put money on serra, alot of people don't give him enough credit.he killed shonnie carter then got hit with a spinning backfist but if you watched he fell but went right into his guard position to defend the ref stopped it.to many good fights get stopped to early and fighters get undeserved lost.gsp killed hughes and serra beat the shit out of him don't underestimate serra.i was trying to get tickets for that fight but now i still got a chance.

Yeah, true. But tell ya what, Im 50/50 on that. One, I wanted him to lose to Hughes so that GSP would have another crack at him before he retires. Two, I wanted him to win so that GSP would have another crack at Serra.

See, if Hughes wins, Dana is going to want to sign him to another contract and I know Hughes wants to retire and work on his school. Right now Hughes is still trying to fullfill the obligations to his current contract, Im not sure how he's going to feel about another multi fight contract at this stage of his life. I doubt Hughes had a stipulation that if he lost and then won again he would be able to retire as Champion. That wouldn't do Dana any good.

Does that make sense....? I just woke up.....

Serra is good but Hughes is still just that much better than him. It's for that reason I would put money on Hughes.

But see Im not sure where Hughe's mind is right now what with his school taking off and shit. I dont want to speculate on the mental side of the man but it just SEEMS as if I get diffferent vibes from him this time. he doesnt sound as "hungry" for this win as before, if that makes any sense. He has nothing to lose either way, so......... I mean he's only human. Ya know?

a btter fight would be serra vs.gsp that would be a great fight and hard to pick because i like both of them.but gsp still wants to fight and be champ hughes doesn't and when a fighter dosn't want to fight then it over with.if you loose the passion then were do you get the will to fight.like hughes says your just doing moves!!!!but your breathen ,the whole time your breathen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because there is and always has been more anticipation for Chuck vs Wandy than Serra vs Hughes.

You didn't answer the question! <let me help out>

They are still fighting...neither of them have a belt and both lost their last fights (2 for Chuck).

Non title holders don't headline events with titles on the line, sorry, that is just how it goes!

You want to wait for then next UFC event so they can headline it or get these 2 in the cage before it's too late?

                            Ah.

Yeah, get them in the cage now. But not necessarily before it's too late. It's just that if Hughes vs Serra wasnt on the card, Chuck vs Silva would have been the headliner. Im sure more people want to see that one than the title fight simply because it's been so long in the making. I think it will be a better fight, personaly unless they both REALLY suck now. Im not the type of person to put somebody on the back burner just cause they loast a fight or two. Great fighters are great fighters in my opinion. For instance, most people will label Rich Franklin a has been. That may be true as far as title shots are conderned, I dunno. But he can still put on a greta fight.

                            Just not against Anderson Silva
